Brief description:
In March 2024, anti-Serbian graffiti appeared on the facade of an apartment building in Dubrovačka Street, Split. The “Serbs on the Willow’ graffiti displays corpses hanging on the tree, among which one can recognise the bodies of a man and a child. The inscription “Serb family tree” was placed underneath the picture.
The police launched an investigation.
It has to be noted, however, that this is not the first time such graffiti has appeared in Croatia. In 2017 a case from Vukovar was reported by Telegraf.rs and as the media indicated, it was not the first one. According to the regional TV N1, this sign has been appearing occasionally on the streets and squares in Croatia – in 2013 in Zagreb, in 2016 – on a tree near the entrance to a kindergarten in the form of labels and on the streets of Petrinja.
The cases have also been pointed out in the 2016 Amnesty International report on Croatia, outlining that the political instability at the time was followed by a rise in nationalist rhetoric and hate speech, especially against the Serbs, refugees, and migrants.
