Brief description:

On 30 January 2022, an anti-Islamic poster, ‘‘Stop the Islamisation of Evros now!’’ was hung on a wall opposite the historical Çelebi Sultan Mehmet Mosque in the town of Didymoteicho, in the province of Evros in Greece. The historical heritage site from the Ottoman Empire was damaged by a fire in 2017, and restoration works are ongoing.

The attack on the religious identity of the Turkish community in Western Thrace was condemned by the minority and the Friendship, Equality, and Peace Party (DEB). It was seen as more evidence of Greece's unwelcoming stance toward the Muslim population. Between the end of the 19th century and November 2020, there was no mosque in Athens, despite an estimated 300,000 Muslims living in the greater Athens area.
